iPod Compatible Video

This article is divided into four parts separately introduce what is iPod Compatible Video, which video format is better for Apple iPod Video, is my video iPod compatible and how to make the video compatible with your iPod.

Part One: What is iPod Compatible Video?
Part Two: Which video format is better for Apple iPod video?
Part Three: Is My Video iPod Compatible?
Part Four: How to make the video compatible with your iPod?

Part One: What is iPod Compatible Video?
Firstly, I will introduce you what is iPod Compatible Video, iPod Nano Compatible Video such as iPod Video MP4, iPod Video H 264, the specifications page lists the following:
Apple iPod video specifications from their official website:
H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; H.264 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 3.0 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats.

That’s a little confusing, but there’s only a few numbers you’ll need to remember for each format.

iPod H.264 Video formatThe highest video bitrate with the H.264 codec is 768 kilobits per second. The biggest picture size for your H.264 movie is 320 pixels wide by 240 pixels high, the exact dimensions of your iPod’s screen. Your iPod can play H.264 video at framerates up to 30 frames per second. Every one of the applications that we’ll be using encodes with the Baseline Profile. Your audio needs to be encoded as AAC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, and it can be in either stereo or mono. As long as you follow all the guidelines, your movie can be a QuickTime movie or an MPEG-4 movie file.

iPod MPEG-4 Video formatYour other option, MPEG-4 video, supports a much higher bitrate than H.264 video - 2,500 kilobits per second. Using higher bitrates will also create larger files. The result: you’ll have less space for additional songs and movies. The biggest picture size for your MPEG-4 video is 480 pixels wide by 480 pixels high - three times as many pixels as your iPod’s screen is capable of displaying. Your iPod will shrink the picture proportionally so that everything fits on the screen. Again, the iPod can play videos up to 30 frames per second and our audio and file format options are the same as H.264 video.

Part Two: Which video format is better for Apple iPod video?
That’s a tough question. H.264 is arguably better because it offers high quality and a much smaller file size when compared to MPEG-4. However, both formats look quite good when you encode your video at the higher supported video settings. One thing that most people will agree on is that H.264 video takes longer to encode than standard MPEG-4. This means that converting a two hour movie to iPod video can take considerably longer using the H.264 codec (especially with QuickTime Pro’s pokey Export: Movie to iPod video option). Still, I prefer the H.264 codec in most instances.

Part Three: Is My Video iPod Compatible?
Some of the video files that you download from the web or from file sharing networks like BitTorrent may be iPod compatible - even if they’re not marked as such.

The easiest way to determine whether a video can be played on your iPod is to open the file in QuickTime and select Window: Show Movie Info. In most cases your video should be iPod-ready if the format is H.264 or MPEG-4, the audio is AAC, and the size of your video is 320 x 240 (or smaller) for H.264 or 480 x 480 (or smaller) for MPEG-4. Also, look at the data rate and make sure it’s not over 900 kbits/sec for H.264 or 2600 kbits/sec for MPEG-4.

QuickTime info for iPod Video

Part Four: How to make the video compatible with your iPod?
If you have QuickTime Pro ($30 and worth every penny) or the latest version of iTunes (free!), this is, by far, the easiest conversion that we’ll talk about.

In iTunes, after you’ve added your video to the library, right click it. Select Convert Selection for iPod. iTunes will let you know if your video is already in the correct format. If it’s not, your video will slowly be converted to an H.264 video.

UPDATE: I’ve heard several complaints of iTunes creating iPod videos without sound. You should probably avoid using iTunes to convert your videos.

In QuickTime Pro, open your movie and, in the file menu, select Export… and in the export drop-down, select Movie to iPod (320 x 240) and click Save. QuickTime will create an optimized H.264 video with AAC audio.

You may want to go pour yourself a cup of tea or take a nap. If your file is large, QuickTime’s slow conversion process can take several hours.

If you’re an inexperienced user, I recommend using QuickTime Pro or iTunes because they’re absolutely foolproof. However there are other much faster, more powerful applications for converting your videos. Read on!

Don’t have QuickTime Pro? Aiseesoft iPod Video Converter!
Aiseesoft iPod Video Converter supports so comprehensive video formats including converting MPG, MPEG, MPEG2, VOB, MP4, M4V, RM, RMVB, WMV, ASF, MKV, TS, MPV, AVI, 3GP,3G2, FLV, MPV, MOD, TOD to iPod Video MP4, iPod Video H 264. You can customize your own output video by the settings function. For example, if you want a high quality video you can raise the values of Video Biterate, Audio Biterate and Audio Sample Rate, if you want a smaller file you can reduce the value.

Goodbye (Crummy) CAPTCHAs. Hello Ad Dollars?

Hate dealing with captchas–the squiggly, indecipherable text strings Web sites often force you to read and regurgitate for security reasons? Join the club. And pay attention to what Solve Media is trying to do.

The New York start-up isn’t getting rid of captchas, but it does promise to make them more tolerable: It says it can swap out the random, hard-to-read text with clear, concise English. And while it’s at it, it says it can turn captchas into revenue generators for publishers, by transforming them into ad units.

It’s a super-simple pitch, and if you see the ad units Solve Media is selling, it gets even easier to understand. So click the image to enlarge:

How can Solve’s easy-to-read English text defeat the bots and other evildoers that captchas are supposed to foil with their jabberwocky? Got me. I’ve got no way of verifying its claims, either.

But assuming it does work, CEO Ari Jacoby has an interesting product on his hands. He’s pitching it specifically to display advertisers and big brands that put a lot of money into TV spots but have a hard time doing much with click-per-action schemes offered by Google’s (GOOG) AdWords and others.

The idea is that Jacoby’s ads require users to engage with them, by typing in the names of brands and products. But they don’t do anything beyond that–they don’t trigger a video, or take you to another Web site or anything else. It’s sort of like sitting on your couch and uttering “Outback” every time a Subaru spot comes on.

Jacoby claims his “type-in” ads will increase Web surfers’ recall of the ads, for the same reason that writing anything down makes it easier to remember.

That’s much more valuable than taking users to a branded minisite, he argues. “If we can deliver the cognitive payload up front, then we don’t need to deliver the users to a site that they don’t really want to go to anyway.”

And Jacoby thinks advertisers will pay up for the privilege, in the range of 25 cents to 50 cents each time a surfer types in a brand or product. He’ll split revenue 50/50 with publishers.

Playing along so far: Advertisers including Microsoft (MSFT), GE’s (GE) Universal Pictures and Toyota (TM), and publishers including Meredith (MDP), Tribune and AOL (AOL).

AOL is also an investor in the company (previously named AdCopy), via its AOL Ventures arm. Other investors, who have collectively put something like $6 million into the company, include First Round Capital, New Atlantic Ventures and angels like Chris Dixon, Roger Ehrenberg, Aydin Senkut and Shervin Pishevar.

AMD: Did We Say Q3 Would Be Seasonally Up? We Meant the Exact Opposite

Well, this doesn’t bode well for the on-the-rebound PC industry. AMD (AMD) today cut its third-quarter sales forecast, saying the revenue that it had expected to be “up seasonally” from the second quarter will actually be down one to four percent. The reason: “weaker-than-expected demand, particularly in the consumer notebook market in Western Europe and North America.”

Sound familiar? Intel (INTC) said something similar last month when reducing its outlook for the third quarter.

Seems that the PC-industry momentum we’ve seen over the past year may not have been quite what we thought it was.

Oh dear–a PR war with a social networking site? Really?

(How I wish I could say I was surprised.)

In any case, such things are better left to the professionals who make Hollywood movies, opening October 1 at a theater near you.

A Japanese developer NekoMiMi has achieved that with PSPTube. Here are the steps:
Download the PSPTube from here http://www.PSP-hacks.com/file/1225 and open the zip file. Now before putting it in your PSP open the PSPTube.cfg file and press ctrl + F, and type in "DEV" press until you find Dev id="".
Ok now go to http://www.youtube.com/dev create an account and insert the account in between the arentheses.
Extract the PSPTube from the 200over folder and put it in GAME352 folder (Set the Kernel to the 352) Now open it in the PSP and choose an internet connection with the Circle button, it may say no videos, press circle and you'll be able to search.

Nokia’s CEO Switch: Right Move, Wrong Time?

Nokia replaced its chief executive, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo (OPK), this morning with Stephen Elop, the head of Microsoft’s business unit, in a bid to “accelerate the company’s renewal” after an ugly 70 percent decline in market value over the past few years.

The move was a long time coming. Question is, did it come at the right time? And while it’s obviously far too early to say definitively, it’s clear that it comes at an awkward one. Arguably, the only “right time” for a shift like this was years ago–before Nokia (NOK) was caught off guard by Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone and the new breed of smartphone it heralded.

That said, making the change on the eve of Nokia World, the company’s annual showcase event, seems an unfortunate choice, as does making it ahead of a major refresh of the company’s smartphone portfolio.

While Elop’s appointment will certainly put an end to speculation about OPK’s tenure at the company, it’s also going to put Nokia’s executive shake-up top of mind at a time when attention is best focused on new products. Worse, it puts the company in the precarious position of swapping out CEOs ahead of a major product launch, the N8–Nokia’s new marquee smartphone, its first to use the Symbian 3 operating system and the device with which the company has said it will reclaim its lost glory.

In other words, Elop is not starting off with a clean slate, but a full one, overflowing with a new software platform and a new smartphone portfolio. He’s not going to be recasting Nokia’s smartphone strategy–he’s going to be executing the one established by his ousted predecessor. And he’s going to be doing it with little hardware design and wireless carrier experience, two things crucial to that strategy’s success.

That seems a daunting challenge. That said, Elop did run Microsoft’s (MSFT) $19 billion Business Division, so perhaps his operational chops make up for those deficits.

The timing of the move may be debatable, but the need for it was not.

By the way, here is the email that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer sent out to employees about Elop’s departure:

Microsoft Business Division Transition

Sept. 9, 2010

I am writing to let you know that Stephen Elop has been offered and has accepted the job as CEO of Nokia and will be leaving Microsoft, effective immediately. Stephen leaves in place a strong business and technical leadership team, including Chris Capossela, Kurt DelBene, Amy Hood and Kirill Tatarinov, all of whom will report to me for the interim.

The MBD business continues to grow and thrive, with 15 percent growth in the last quarter. It has been good to see the great response to Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010, the growth of our Dynamics business and the way we have been successful in extending all our MBD products and services to the cloud. I appreciate the way that Stephen has been a good steward of the brand and business in his time here, and look forward to continuing to work with him in his new role at Nokia.

Please join me in wishing Stephen well.

Steve

Status Update: Getting Funny Looks Because I’m Talking to My Car

In the race to bring more voice tech to vehicles, Ford may have pulled ahead with its Microsoft-based Sync system, but it looks like GM is ready to make a run with a rebuilt OnStar. Bloomberg says the venerable in-car communication service may start offering some free features next year, reportedly including voice-to-text ability that would, among other things, let drivers update their Facebook pages as they jockey for the best lane on the freeway. Luckily, OnStar already includes accident assistance.

What Big Brands Are Spending on Google

Before BP could stem the oil gusher at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico, it unleashed $100 million in ad spending, largely on network TV, to stem the damage to its image. But it also started spending heavily where it had never spent much before: buying ads in Google’s search results.

The operation is simple, but the stability would be a great concern, it kept reporting error messages during my try which is really frustrated. Perhaps it's not wise enough to spend hours coping with those errors messages, as there must be some commercial programs that perform much more reliably, like the Video Converter for Mac.
If you want to convert videos to DVD, here is DVD Creator for Mac.

How to share the iTunes Music and videos between two computers for free

Some people may meet that situation: You and your brother both have iTunes library under the same credit card account. Occasionally, you want to get the same song, however you wouldn't want you both to pay the $0.99 where virtually the same account is purchasing the song twice. So how can you and/or he download the songs from each other once it's purchased on a single computer? This is a guide to tell you how to share iTunes Music and videos between two computers such as sharing iTunes Music and videos between Windows PC and Mac OS X, sharing iTunes Music and videos between Mac OS and Mac OS X and sharing iTunes Music and videos between Windows PC and Windows PC

Step 1, Networking computers.
If you want to share iTunes videos and music between computers, you need to network PC and Mac first.
If you do not know how to Network Windows with Mac OS X, go there:
Networking Windows (2000/XP/2003*) with Mac OS X (10.3/10.4)
Information you will need to know
1.The IP Address of your PC (Start > Run > CMD {return} > "ipconfig" {return})
2The IP Address of your Mac (Applications > Utilities > Terminal {Run app} > for ethernet connection "ipconfig getifaddr en0" {return} or for wireless "ipconfig getifaddr en1" {return})>
3.The workgroup the PC is in (Right click on My Computer, select Properties, and select the Computer Name tab)

System Configuration
It is important that the account you log in with on your XP system has a password set, if it does not you will not be able to login to your Windows share from OS X. You need to put your Mac in the same workgroup as your Windows PC. To do this open "Directory Access" (Applications > Utilities > Directory Access). Click on the padlock in the bottom left corner to make changes; you will be prompted for your password. If "SMB" is not ticked off, then tick it off. Select "SMB" and hit the "Configure…" button. Now enter the name of your Windows workgroup. In my case the name is "AD".

Share iTunes videos between pc and Mac, iTunes videos from pc to Mac

Setting up the PC to share files
You need to create and share a folder on your PC that you will then access from your Mac. To do this create a folder (or select and existing one) right click on it from Windows Explorer and select "Properties". Select the "Sharing" tab and share out the folder. I'd recommend you use a one word name for the share. For example "Mac", not "Apple Mac Share", it just narrows the risk of complications.
