Local Hero: Google Ups the Ante With Place Search

Search advancements at Google continue apace, with the company rolling out a steady parade of tweaks and enhancements. Last month, it was Google Instant–real-time search results as you type. This month it’s Place Search, a new way to present search results for local queries.

Essentially, Place Search delivers location-specific search results by organizing content from across the Web around a place, much like Google News aggregates news information around a particular story. And, according to Google, that will make it that much faster and easier for its users to get local information, which they are increasingly looking for. The company says that about 20 percent of searches conducted on Google are local in terms of their overall intent. And it’s so confident of that metric that for queries that have a very heavy and clear local intent, it will automatically switch users into the Place Search mode.

“This is all about contextual discovery,” Marissa Mayer, the company’s VP of geographic and local services, told me this morning. “Think of it this way, as another layer of the Web. One of the first layers of the Web was the content of the Web itself. You looked at a Web page and analyzed its content. That was the purpose of our original search product. Another layer is social–what are the social aspects of the Web? What are the ‘people’ aspects of the Web? Who created this page? Who read it? Did they like it or not? Do I know them?

“Now, we’ve got another fundamental layer: Location. Where was this page authored? Is it about a particular location? Where are the people who this page is relevant to? You start combining these layers–content, social, local–and you get something very powerful.”

Indeed. Particularly in the mobile space, at which Places is very clearly aimed.

Place Search is rolling out now and should be available globally in the next few days.

Saving Myspace: CEO Mike Jones Talks About Rethink, Relaunch and–Fingers Crossed–Resurgence

Mike Jones is perhaps one of the nicer Internet execs out there.

But, after much management turmoil at Myspace, it turns out the CEO is also the last man standing at the News Corp. unit, as it finally rolls out a new version aimed at reviving the troubled site.

That happened last night, as the yeoman’s work–under heavy pressure and intense scrutiny from inside and outside–done by Jones and his staff was finally launched.

The new beta version of Myspace moves dramatically away from its roots as a social networking site and distancing itself from Facebook, by becoming a “social entertainment” hub aimed directly at the Gen Y audience.

It’s a major niche play, in an arena Myspace was already well known for–with an emphasis on sharing and discovery of music, television, movies, games, videos and photos from within and without.

As I wrote:

“It is a bold, if risky, move, which could result in a dramatic decline of users or–despite the grim reality of second acts on the Internet–reset Myspace to begin a new cycle of growth.”

A Win for Adobe: Condé Nast Will Use It Instead of Rolling Its Own Tablet Magazines

Here’s a win for Adobe, which could use one: Condé Nast, which has been testing the software company’s tablet publishing tool against a homegrown version, is going to use Adobe’s offering instead.

The move isn’t a total surprise, as Condé and Adobe have been working together closely for more than a year. But Condé wasn’t convinced that using Adobe, and/or any outside software company at all, was the best way to go. And last spring’s Apple/Flash flare-up gave the publisher pause about going forward with Adobe. But that’s over now.

In practical terms, that means that iPad titles that Condé Nast has already published on its own, like GQ and Glamour, will be “reintroduced” using Adobe tools. And that Condé executive Scott Dadich, who spearheaded Condé’s first Adobe launch when he was creative director at Wired, is now an even shinier star.

Condé’s press release:

CONDÉ NAST WILL USE ADOBE TECHNOLOGY FOR DIGITAL MAGAZINE PRODUCTION

New York, N.Y., October 25, 2010 – Condé Nast plans to introduce digital replica editions across its portfolio of magazine brands using the Adobe Digital Publishing Suite, it was announced today by Robert A. Sauerberg, Jr., President of Condé Nast.

This decision comes as the result of an ongoing R&D period that included the introduction of five digital replica apps using two different approaches and tools in order to gain maximum learning in this emerging area. The company will continue to seek the best technologies to bring its award-winning content to market as platforms and devices emerge.

Digital editions of WIRED and The New Yorker are available for iPad and were created by the magazines using Adobe tools and workflows. Brands with apps already in the market – GQ, Vanity Fair and Glamour – will be recreated using Adobe tools.

“The innovative work our in-house team at Condé Nast Digital did made us first to market with replicas on iPhone and iPad and has allowed significant learnings,” Mr. Sauerberg said. “Our team considered many factors to ensure we had a platform that could be continually enhanced to meet the needs of our consumers and distributors.”

Joe Simon, Chief Technology Officer of Condé Nast, is participating in a keynote discussion about this announcement at MAX, Adobe’s annual worldwide conference taking place in Los Angeles today.

“We have always intended to deliver our content on a variety of platforms and devices, and the Adobe Design Suite will help us efficiently achieve the ‘author once, publish anywhere’ goal,” Mr. Simon noted.

Condé Nast, a division of Advance Publications, operates in 25 countries. In the United States, Condé Nast publishes 18 consumer magazines, two trade publications and 27 websites that garner international acclaim and unparalleled consumer engagement.
