Convenient Directory of Least-Private Facebook Members Now Available

Facebook users may have control over how their information is shared, but they don’t always get to decide where and in what form that information is shared unless they proactively choose to. Case in point: The torrent of account details for more than 100 million Facebook users that surfaced today.

Harvested from publicly available information held in Facebook’s open access directory, the torrent is essentially a list of users with a cavalier attitude towards privacy and a reminder of just how easily the personal information we post online can be gathered for whatever purpose–large-scale data mining, for instance–unless we explicitly take steps to prevent that from happening.

If you didn’t make some thoughtful opt-out decisions in your Facebook profile, chances are you unwittingly opted in to this torrent. And that’s troubling because there are 100 million such people.

“Facebook helps you connect and share with the people in your life,” the site promises. But not always just the ones you’ve invited. As the torrent’s creator notes, “Once I have the name and URL of a user, I can view, by default, their picture, friends, information about them, and some other details. If the user has set their privacy higher, at the very least I can view their name and picture. So, if any searchable user has friends that are non-searchable, those friends just opted into being searched, like it or not! Oops :).”

Oops, indeed.

If Oracle Doesn’t Have an M&A Budget, Then Larry Ellison Doesn’t Have an Ego

Oracle isn’t going to spend $70 billion on acquisitions over the next five years, despite President Charles Phillips’s claim that it will likely do just that.

Remarking on Oracle’s acquisition plans at the Fortune Brainstorm Tech 2010 conference last week, Phillips said, “If you look forward for the next five years, we’ll probably double what we’ve spent on acquisitions in the last five years….If things hold up, we could easily do that.” He added that the company is particularly interested in vertical business-software firms as well as hardware firms. “There’s plenty left to do,” he noted.

That may be so, but Oracle (ORCL) would prefer not to be known as the company planning to do it. In a hastily issued statement, Oracle “clarified” Phillips’s comments, insisting its acquisition strategy remains unchanged. “Oracle does not have a five-year acquisition budget,” said spokeswoman Karen Tillman. “We don’t even have a one-year acquisition budget. While it is highly unlikely that we will spend anything approaching $70 billion in five years, we will be opportunistic and, if market conditions warrant, we will buy additional companies that further our strategic goals and address our customers’ needs.”

Hard to believe that a company as aggressively acquisitive as Oracle doesn’t have an M&A budget, but evidently that’s the party line and by the sound of things, Phillips clearly overstepped it.

How to play iPod video on TV

You may often confused with how to play iPod video on TV without Apple TV? Here is a guide to do this.
Note: This method is not usable for the 6th generation iPod.

What You'll Need
In order to get your iPod connected properly to your TV, you'll need the following items on hand:
A video-capable iPod. Any color will do.
An iPod-compatible video. Load it onto your iPod through iTunes.
Note: iPod accepts mp4 video detail as: MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats.
If your videos are not iPod format files, you can use Aiseesoft iPod Video Converter for Mac to convert videos to iPod format files. Aiseesoft iPod Video Converter for Mac is one of the best video to iPod converters on Mac os which can convert MP4, 3GP, AVI, WMV, RM, MPEG, and FLV to iPod video with very high quality and various output settings in high speed(>300%). If you use Windows, you can use iPod movie converter for windows.
An A/V cable. If you don't already have an eighth-inch-to-RCA cable, you can pick one up on eBay for five or six bucks shipped. Search for "camcorder A/V cable." Remember, you want a three-plug yellow/red/white RCA connection at one end and a three-banded eighth-inch (3.5mm) A/V plug at the other.

A/V cable
Figure 1. A camcorder A/V cable has a three-plug RCA connection at one end and a three-banded 1/8" plug at the other

Setting Up Your iPod Video Options
Setting up your iPod video options lets you control how you export video. The iPod Video Options screen selects how your iPod handles video file playback.
To open these settings, choose Videos -> Video Settings from your main iPod menu. This screen offers three settings: TV Out, TV Signal and Widescreen. Adjust to produce the video playback style you need.

Play iPod Video on TV
Figure 2. Videos -> Video Settings controls the way your iPod plays back video files

TV Out
Whenever you play a video file, your iPod must make a choice. Video iPods either play video on the built-in screen or they transmit a video signal out of the microphone jack. They don't do both. The TV Out option controls which behavior occurs.
Use this setting to choose from:
No. Playback remains on the iPod itself.
Yes. A TV signal is produced.
Ask. The iPod prompts you whenever you play a video file.
I always use the Ask option. Yes, it does add an extra step whenever I play a video file, but it gives me the flexibility to choose playback behavior on a case-by-case basis. I like that.

TV Signal
European and Australian television sets use a different signal standard than those used in America and Japan. If you live in the U.S., your TV works with the NTSC standard. European countries mostly use PAL. Make sure you've selected the correct signal for your country.
Widescreen
iPods can play back widescreen video, if only on exported video. The built-in screen uses a traditional 4:3 screen ratio, rather than widescreen's 16:9 proportions. Choose Yes to produce a widescreen signal, or No to export the traditional TV output.
Connecting the iPod to TV
It takes a few steps to connect your iPod to your TV. Start by inserting the A/V cord's eighth-inch plug into your iPod's earphone jack. In it goes, schnickt. Couldn't be eas.
Here's where it gets a little tricky. In order to make your TV play back the iPod signal, you've got to redirect the outputs. You can't just plug the yellow RCA plug into the yellow RCA jack and the red into the red or the white into the white. No. Those geniuses at Apple send the video signal over the red RCA output. (Normally it arrives on yellow.) The sound comes through the white and yellow plugs.
I ended up going to an Apple store and testing this on iPod after iPod. They all have this quirk. It was intentional. But hey, it's proprietary. Woohoo. So here's what you have to do:
- Plug the red RCA plug into your TV's yellow RCA jack.
- Plug the yellow RCA plug into your TV's white RCA jack.
- Plug the white RCA plug into your TV's red RCA jack.

Play iPod video on TVPlay iPod video on TV
Figure 3. Left: TV jacks, unplugged; right: TV jacks, plugged with A/V cable.

After making all of these connections, you're physically ready to begin playback.

Playing Your Video
On your iPod, navigate to the movie you want to watch and select it. Your iPod prompts you to choose whether to play the video with TV Off or TV On. (You set the TV Out option to "Ask," remember?) Choose TV On.Play iPod video on TV
Figure 4. Choose TV On to redirect the video through the earphone jack.
As your video starts, a status screen appears on your iPod and the video plays back on your television. The status screen tracks playback progress, just as it would in iTunes.Play ipod video on tv
Figure 5. The iPod video status screen shows playback progress.
Leave the television volume control at normal levels and use the iPod volume control to adjust the audio. The audio and video should both sound and look excellent.

$150 for Xbox Kinect?

$149.99. That’s the price Microsoft has given Kinect, its new motion-controlled game interface for Xbox 360. Scheduled to go on sale Nov. 4, the device will be packaged with the Kinect Adventures game or sold as part of a $299.99 bundle with the new Xbox 360 4GB console.

That seems a good deal for folks who don’t yet own a 360. How the Kinect’s price tag will go over with those who already do remains to be seen. Gamers who might have been tempted by the novelty at the $100 price point may be more inclined to see what Kinect games develop before plopping down $150.

Speaking of the new 360, Microsoft (MSFT) says it will hit stores on August 3 for $200.

Duct-Tape Makers Look for Boost From Consumer Reports iPhone Verdict

So Consumer Reports, proprietor of the largest nonprofit consumer-product testing center in the world, says not to buy Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone 4 (or, alternatively, have some duct tape handy). How will that affect sales?

Tough to say. The much-publicized reception issues surrounding the iPhone 4’s antenna design do not seem to have slowed uptake noticeably yet. But now that those issues have been verified under laboratory conditions by an independent review organization, particularly one as influential as Consumer Reports, you’d expect sales to suffer at least a bit. Right?

J.P. Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz thinks they might, or rather he thinks there’s a risk that they might. “At this point, concerns around iPhone 4 reception do not appear to be impacting demand, but we think there are risks when a well-respected product rating agency such as Consumer Reports issues an unfavorable report,” he said in a note to clients, adding “The report should turn up the heat on Apple.”

Or spike sales of the company’s iPhone 4 Bumpers…or duct tape.

How to use Mac The Ripper to rip DVD to iPod, iPhone, etc. on Mac

Part 1. Use MacTheRipper to minus the copy protections for free
Mac The Ripper is a free DVD ripper (extractor) for Mac OS X. It can extract commercial DVD movies to your hard drive, minus all the copy protections and region controls put in place by DVD publishers. Mac The Ripper removes CSS encryption, Macrovision protection, and sets the disc's region code to '0' for region-free by default, and is capable of removing RCE region protection as well, making an unrestricted copy of any DVD movie you own. It doesn't rely on the DVD drive to get the CSS decryption keys, so that means that you do not need to play the DVD with DVD Player in order to rip it to your hard drive unprotected. MacThe Ripper is also capable of removing UOPs, or User Operation Prohibitions, which are the settings that prevent you from skipping or fast-forwarding certain parts of DVDs, such as FBI warnings, previews, logos, intros, etc. Mac The Ripper is also able to extract discs with the new ARccOS protection, as well as DVDs that have been damaged or improperly mastered.
WARNING: Disabling UOPs can break the navigation on certain DVDs. If you disable UOPs, be sure to verify the DVD with DVD Player before you burn it to DVD±R disc.

Step 1. install MacThe Ripper
Download it from: http://www.Mactheripper.org. To install Mac The Ripper, simply mount the .dmg archive by double-clicking it, and copy the Mac The Ripper application from it to your Applications folder (or wherever you want it ), along with this Mac The Ripper Manual if you need it.

Only (and always) set the 'RCE Region' to 'OFF' when it says that RCE is '-CLEAR-'.
Once you've selected the type of extraction and options you want, you can go back to the 'Disc' tab and click the 'GO!' button (or hit the 'Enter' or 'Return' key) to start the extraction.

SoftBank: You Can Have My iPhone Exclusivity Agreement When You Pry It From My Cold, Dead Hands

SoftBank gained more than a quarter of a million new subscribers in June–largely because of Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone. The company–the iPhone’s exclusive carrier in Japan–said today that it added a net 229,500 subscribers for the month, far more than the country’s biggest provider, NTT DoCoMo, which reported a gain of 164,000.

SoftBank didn’t say what percentage of those new subscribers purchased iPhones, but it was likely significant, given deluge of pre-orders and massive lines for the iPhone 4 when it first arrived at market. Said a SoftBank spokesperson, “The release of the new iPhone contributed to subscriber gains.”

It most certainly did. According to Tokyo-based MM Research Institute, 1.7 million iPhones were sold in Japan in the fiscal year to March 31. That’s 72 percent of all smartphones sold. SoftBank is going to milk its iPhone exclusive as long as it can.

Tracking the Tour de France With Tech

The 2010 Tour de France got under way this weekend, and technologically inclined cycling fans have plenty of options for getting their fix even when they’re away from the television.

The length of the race and the time difference between the U.S. and France mean even the most dedicated U.S. cycling enthusiasts can have a tough time watching all stages.

But on the iPhone, users can see video of the event on the official Tour de France application from the Versus channel, which is showing the Tour in the U.S. At $14.99, the program is pricier than many iPhone apps, but it offers something many applications don’t — live video. Highlights, weather and detailed tracking also are available, and the app alerts users during important parts of the race. As of Tuesday, it was the third highest-grossing app in the iTunes store. Versus also is showing live video on the Web, with a service that costs $29.99.

Free Tour de France options are more limited.

Internet Explorer Stops Bleeding Market Share

Normally, a 0.57 percent increase wouldn’t be anything to get excited about, no matter what was being measured. But for Microsoft, that little uptick represents the biggest monthly gain in Internet Explorer’s worldwide market share in at least two years and a sign that IE’s long slide may have bottomed out.
