Intel Seeks Maker of Chips for Phones

Intel Corp. is finalizing a deal to acquire Infineon Technologies AG’s wireless-chip unit for less than $1.5 billion, people familiar with the matter said.

A deal between the leading maker of chips for personal computers and the German company could be announced as soon as Monday, but people familiar with the matter cautioned that the talks could still fall apart.

Intel declined to comment. Infineon couldn’t be reached.

If the deal goes through, it would mark the second acquisition in about two weeks for the chip maker. On Aug. 19, Intel said it was acquiring the security technology firm McAfee Inc. for almost $7.7 billion in cash.

Infineon’s chips are used in smart phones, including Apple Inc.’s high-profile iPhone 4, which would aid Intel’s efforts to move into that market.
